Coaster Brake Maintenance

Although coaster brakes are rare these days, they can still be found on older bikes and some new kids bikes, plus some beach cruisers.

They work when you apply backwards pressure to the pedals. This causes brake pads inside the rear hub to engage and stop the bike.

If you take apart a coaster brake, be very careful. They are full of parts that will spill out everywhere if you are not careful. Take caution and lay out the parts in a line so that you can reinstall them later.

For coaster brake maintenance, simply take the hub apart, clean it, and fill it with fresh grease.

(You can use Brakleen to clean some of the internals.)
