How To Cut The Dropouts On A BMX Frame
This guide will cover how to cut the dropouts on your BMX frame to reduce weight and allow for better grinds.
You will need:
- Dremel
- Fiberglass reinforced metal cutting wheel
- Angle grinder or Hacksaw
- Marker
- Safety glasses and thick gloves.
Here’s how to do it:
1. Mark the frame.
Start by marking the piece of frame you want to remove. Usually a black or silver permanent marker will work.
2. Start cutting with your Dremel.
To get the most precise cut, I suggest using a small tool like a Dremel. In conjunction with a fiberglass-reinforced cutting wheel, it will slice through your dropouts (slowly.)
3. Finish up with an angle grinder or hacksaw.
Once you have cut some guidelines, you can probably finish the job with a more powerful tool. Either an angle grinder or plain old hacksaw will cut faster than the Dremel.
4. Smooth it out.
File and sand everything smooth.
5. Fresh paint.
Make sure you apply fresh primer and paint over the bare metal to protect your frame from rust.
CAUTION! Power tools are dangerous and sparks will be flying. Wear your safety gear and proceed with caution!
